From the 1st June to the 7th June it is National Volunteers’ Week; a special week in the year when we really shout out about all the amazing work of our volunteers and say a huge thank you for their support, passion and dedication.
But volunteering across Birmingham Museums doesn’t just happen during this one week of the year, our team support us every month to enhance what we are able to do and we are so lucky to have them. They really do make a massive difference. Our team work behind the scenes, mill, garden, engage visitors, support projects and much, much more. But don’t just hear about it from me; this week we have three new blogs coming up and you can find out about volunteering at Aston Hall from Gayle, learn about what it is like to welcome visitors to Soho House from Jack and discover about Deminder’s role as a Youth Art Competition Assistant.
To celebrate Volunteers’ Week at Birmingham Museums we will be holding our annual Volunteer Summer Picnic for all volunteers at Aston Hall. It is always great to get so many of our team together to celebrate all they have achieved and to really say THANK YOU. Plus there is always lots of yummy food, time to chat, an interesting activity and of course a quiz!
Also during the picnic we will be presenting our Volunteer of the Year Award for 2018. Each year staff are invited to nominate a member of their team or teams for this award and it is always a very difficult decision. This year we have the pleasure to announce that our Volunteer of the Year for 2018 is Gillian Jones who volunteers as a Heritage Interpreter at Soho House. Volunteering for over 4 years with the Trust, Gillian supports the team in so many ways including delivering tours, researching the house and assisting with events. Congratulations to Gillian and a huge thank you from Birmingham Museums for all your time, hard work and dedication to volunteering!

We received such lovely nominations that Janine Eason, Director of Engagement, has also awarded two Runners Up and has also, for the first time ever, initiated two Highly Commended Team Awards too! So the 2018 Runners Up are the Thinktank Conservation Team volunteers (David, Cecilia, Robert and Stephen) who help to look after our science and industry collection and the Arts Council Collection volunteers (Suzanne, Trixie, Rhiannon, Charlie and Rebecca) who support the learning team and Arts Council Collection exhibitions. And our Highly Commended Teams are our Blakesley Hall volunteers and our Aston Hall volunteers. Well done to all and thank you so much.

We are ever so lucky with our wonderful volunteer team across Birmingham Museums, thanks so much to each and every one of them. And most importantly thanks for choosing to volunteer with us and for helping us to achieve so much!
