Summer Holiday Activities at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery

Join us for a whole host of art and history related family activities during the school summer holidays. From contemporary art and technology, to working with artists, getting up close to real artefacts, and enjoying all things Big Sleuth and bear related, there is something for everyone to enjoy!

Our holiday activities follow a weekly pattern, with the odd special event featured over the summer. This programme may be subject to change. Please check the What's On page for regular updates!

Some activities have a small charge per child (please purchase your tickets from reception).

Our drop-in activities are run on a first-come, first-served basis; at busy times we may not be able to accommodate larger, organised groups in one sitting. Please contact us if you would like to find out more about how your visit can work for your group.

All our activities run from 11am – 1pm and 2pm – 4pm.


The Big Sleuth Bear Hunt

Fancy going on a bear hunt? We have 2 Big Sleuth bears and 22 little bears at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery for you to find. Download our family Sleuth trail to help you find the bears! 

When you have find the bears connected with Birmingham Museums you'll be able to redeem a special offer of one free child's meal for each adult meal purchased in the Edwardian Tearooms. (T&Cs apply. The Big Sleuth app is required to redeem the offer).

Object Handling

Monday - Friday from 26th July - 1st September

Investigate real historical objects and find out what it was like to grow up as a child in centuries gone by, with our team of friendly and knowledgeable museum volunteers.

Techlab: Fun Art Activities

Every Monday from 31st July - 28th August

Have fun using technology to make art. Each week will feature a different challenge! Try light drawing, photography, technology inspired crafts, digital drawing, sound experiments and much more.

Artist-led Family Activities

Every Tuesday from 8th - 29th August

We will be running a different artist led activity each Tuesday. A chance to try out art materials and techniques, all based on our collections.

Drop-in activity suitable for all ages.

£2 per child.


Computer Game Design

Every Wednesday from 26th July - 30th August

Work with new and emerging games makers from the Learnplay Foundation to learn about computer gaming and design.  Totally fun, no prior experience necessary.

Suitable for ages 8 plus. In the Gas Hall, I Want! I Want! exhibition

£3.50 per person, per session. Booking essential.

Big Sleuth Bear Activities

Every Thursday from 27th July - 31st August

Get creative with a range of craft activities, all with a bear theme!

Drop in activity, suitable for all ages.

£2 per child. 



Every Friday from 28th July to 1st September

Construct, connect and create your very own Drawbot – a cool robot that will make art for you. With all parts provided, we’ll show you how to assemble your own individual Drawbot.  From there, decorate it to look good then sit back and watch the picture it makes. When you’ve finished, take your picture and robot home with you.

Suitable for ages 6 plus. In the Gas Hall, I Want! I Want! Exhibition.

£3.50 per child. Pre-booking required (20 places per session).

Join our museum enabler team in the Industrial Gallery for free arts and crafts activities, and why not spend some time having fun with role play, books and games in the Mini Museum.
