Exhibition brings new perspectives to Birmingham’s most significant stories

As Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (BMAG) continues to plan for an ambitious re-development project, Birmingham Museums Trust is taking an important step to bring new perspectives to some of the city’s most significant stories. 

The Past is Now – Birmingham and the British Empire, opening on Saturday 28th October, is the first in a series of prototype exhibitions in the ‘Story Lab’ gallery at BMAG. The gallery will see Birmingham Museums Trust work directly with the city’s diverse individuals, communities and activists to help define innovative new ways of understanding Birmingham’s collection of museum objects. Black History Month: Last chance to see exhibition featuring Vanley Burke photos

With October marking the 30th anniversary of Black History Month, visitors are encouraged to visit the last week of The Extraordinary Lives of Everyday People exhibition at Soho House, which features photographs from leading Black British photographer Vanley Burke.

On display until 26th October, the exhibition includes a selection of photographs from Vanley Burke’s ‘Rivers of Birminam’ series which chronicle 40 years of Caribbean heritage in Birmingham. Read More...

Aston Hall opens its doors for new Halloween experience: ‘Fright Nights: Hall of the Damned’

Aston Hall will be unleashing its scariest Halloween weekend yet with Fright Nights: Hall of the Damned, sending shivers down visitors’ spines from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th October 2017.

Birmingham Cathedral grounds come alive with immersive artwork

The Birmingham Cathedral (St Philip’s), grounds will come alive with an immersive artwork during the evenings of Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd September, part of Birmingham’s largest arts festival, Birmingham Weekender.

Visitors and passers-by will be met with ethereal sounds and vivid projections of figures onto the cathedral, trees, walls and clouds of smoke, as performances take place throughout the park from 8pm – 10pm. Read More...

Birmingham will be welcoming delegates from some of the UK’s leading visitor attractions this week, as Birmingham Museums Trust hosts the 2017 ALVA Council Meeting.

ALVA (Association of Leading Visitor Attractions) represents the views and achievements of the country's foremost visitor attractions, and the annual council meeting and AGM will see staff from these well-known venues travel to the city for the two day event from Wednesday 20th September to Thursday 21st September. Best of Birmingham announced as Heritage Week begins

Birmingham’s culture and heritage is set to be celebrated over the next 10 days, following a launch event for Birmingham Heritage Week where winners of the Best of Birmingham photography competition were announced.

Green light for major new £2m children’s attraction at Thinktank

Plans for a permanent new £2m interactive children’s gallery at Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum have got the green light after being awarded £1.4m from the Inspiring Science Fund, a partnership between the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and Wellcome.

The interactive gallery, under the working title ‘MiniBrum’, will deliver Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) learning in a fun and engaging way through a child-sized mini-city in which children and families can safely explore, play and learn in a unique and interactive way. One week to go until Birmingham Heritage Week

With one week to go Birmingham Heritage Week organisers are encouraging local people and visitors to start planning what they will see and do, as the countdown to over 100 events begins.

New events have been added to the line-up, including Flatpack Film Festival’s Birmingham On Film taking a new look at Birmingham’s waterways, with fun sessions and film screenings – with one even aboard a canal boat! Other new events include tours of St Margaret’s Church in Ward End, which dates back to 1516 and is home to a fascinating collection of Heritage monuments, and Beatfreeks will be hosting a series of masterclasses, talks and stalls as part of its Social Exchange event at Mac Birmingham.
