Early compositional Study / Study for the Figure of Milton and two Designs for Tombstones - Recto: Geoffrey Chaucer Stands At The Top, On The Left, Reading From A Lectern. On The Left John Of Gaunt, In Armour And Being Teased By A Young Boy, Stands Behind Him. Seated On The Right With A Beard Is King Edward Iii And Below Him Reclining Is The Black Prince. At The Bottom Are Various Other Figures In Medieval Dress, Five In A Row On The Right With A Bishop And A Faint Figure Just Below Them And Seven On The Left. The Scene Is Encapsulated By A Trefoil Arch In Brown Ink. Verso: On The Left Is A Full-Length Figure Of Milton Standing With A Staff In His Right Hand And A Laurel Wreath On His Head. On The Right Two Designs For Tombstones.
