The Museum of the Jewellery Quarter is built around a perfectly preserved jewellery workshop offering a unique glimpse of working life in Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter.
When the proprietors of the Smith & Pepper jewellery manufacturing firm retired in 1981 they simply ceased trading and locked the door, unaware they would be leaving a time capsule for future generations.
Today the factory is a remarkable museum, which tells the story of the Jewellery Quarter and Birmingham’s renowned jewellery and metalworking heritage.
Group Tour - Perfectly preserved History in the Jewellery Quarter
Take our award winning guided tour where you will find things left as they were on Smith & Pepper’s last working day. Gather round the main jewellers’ bench to watch a demonstration of the traditional skills of this fine trade and discover what it was like to work here.
Or, take our brand new tour celebrating the hard work and fortitude of women in the industry. You’ll hear about how the women all worked long hours, in dirty, noisy, dangerous conditions, for very little pay. Women usually started work at the factory at just 14 years old and the daily exposure to cyanide, lead and acid didn't appear to affect the average retirement age of 80!
We can accommodate groups of 10 to 50 people for a great experience that will last around two hours. After an informative guided tour, you can explore the galleries which feature a wide range of spectacular, locally-made jewellery and metalwares. The museum shop sells original work by local designer jewellers, along with a wide variety of gifts and books. After your tour, you will take refreshments in the tea room.
The perfectly preserved History in the Jewellery Quarter tour includes:
- A guided tour of the Smith & Pepper factory
- A Museum of the Jewellery Quarter Guide book
- Tea and biscuits in the tea room
All for just £10.00 per person. This tour is available from Tuesday to Saturday in all seasons.
