Inspired by the innovations and technical breakthroughs in coinage at Boulton’s Soho Mint in the 18th century, local artists Chris Poolman and Elizabeth Rowe launched ‘Good Money – A Currency Competition for Handsworth’.

Over the last few months local residents have been designing their own currency and nominating local Handsworth ‘visionaries’ who will have their profiles cast on the coins. The coins will be minted in Birmingham and presented to local people both as a limited edition artwork and as a celebration of local heroes.

Visit Soho House to view the finished coins and some of the shortlisted designs. Entry to the exhibition is free. See the Visit Us page for opening times.

This project has been made possible through New Expressions 3, an Arts Council England national pathfinder programme that fosters collaboration between contemporary artists, museums and their audiences. Visit the New Expressions website to discover other events across the country.

Special Edition Coins

Through the project a special edition of the coins will be produced and distributed to the many local residents who took part in creative workshops. Visitors who bring a Soho ‘Good Money’ coin to the museum are entitled to*:

  • Free entry to Soho House over the launch weekend 23-25 May and half price entry thereafter until 1 November 2015
  • Free children’s craft activities at Soho House throughout the summer holiday (event dates to be announced)
  • Half price entry to 4 other heritage sites in Birmingham (Aston Hall, Blakesley Hall, Museum of the Jewellery Quarter, Sarehole Mill) until 1 November 2015

*All subject to availability.
