Coming Out Events

Coming Out: Sexuality, Gender and Identity is a major new exhibition which features over 80 modern and contemporary artworks by internationally renowned artists exploring the themes of gender, sexuality and identity in art. The exhibition includes art works by many well known artists and showcases artworks from The Arts Council Collection, National Museums Liverpool and Birmingham’s collection. 

The exhibition opens at 1pm on Saturday 2 Dec and is on until 15 Apr 2018.

Throughout the exhibition there will be an exciting and innovative programme of events for visitors of all ages. A short summary of all events can be found below:

Coming Out Gallery Trail

Explore themes of sexuality, gender and identity in artworks throughout Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery in the gallery trail.


Postcards with a Purpose

2 Dec - 15 Apr 2018

On the postcards provided in the exhibition, ask questions, share comments or write a message to individuals who either remember a time before decriminalisation, or were directly affected by the legislation. Recipients will be invited to anonymously reply.


Curators Tours of the Coming Out Exhibition

Rainbow Family Fun

Take part in super fun object handing where we will have kaleidoscopes, rainbow glasses and will be making rainbows using prisms. Family fun suitable for all.


Rainbow Stories

Interactive storytelling where we start the story and you draw on the floor to complete it. Ideal for all ages.


Colour Crafts

Make a rainbow sculpture that contains a mini version of you. Suitable for ages 4 and upwards.

Little Rainbows Playtime - Under Three’s stay and play

Sensory play and fun with colour, texture and sound. Suitable for ages 12 months to 3 years.
