Ellen McAdam retires as Director of Birmingham Museums Trust

Ellen McAdam will be stepping down as Director of Birmingham Museums Trust from early June after almost seven years in the post. Ellen had been due to step down in October, but the Board has kindly agreed to advance Ellen’s retirement in order to care for a family member.

Dr Ellen McAdam said: “Leading one of the UK’s greatest regional museum services has been a unique and challenging experience. I would like to thank the team for their magnificent work and support over the last 6+ years and I wish all at Birmingham Museums Trust the best for the future.”

Since 2013, Ellen McAdam has led the independent museums trust during a period of immense change and progression. Under McAdam’s leadership BMT has earned an international reputation for its innovative and socially engaged practice, including its award-winning Collecting Birmingham project which empowered the people of Birmingham to take an active role in developing the city's museum collection.

Other significant milestones during the last six years, include opening the innovative new mini city gallery ‘MiniBrum’ at Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum, co-curated with under 8s; establishing the award-winning ‘Victorian Radicals’ international touring exhibition showcasing the city’s outstanding Pre-Raphaelite collection to audiences in the US; and laying the groundwork for major capital projects.

Chair of Birmingham Museums Trust, Niels de Vos, said: “I would like to thank Ellen for her work leading Birmingham Museums for nearly seven years. She has made an outstanding impact on the Trust and we will continue to build on her achievements. Everyone across the organisation wishes Ellen and her family well.

“This is a challenging time the sector, but we are now seeking Chief Executive to lead the development of a post Covid 19 vision and transform this already award-winning museums service into a modern, globally relevant visitor experience in the heart of Birmingham.”
