MiniBrum leads May Half Term fun at Birmingham Museums

MiniBrum leads the half term at Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum  as children can explore their very own mini city. The excitement continues across Birmingham Museums Trust with a celebration of James Watt’s development of the steam engine at Soho House and a week of Staffordshire Hoard themed happenings at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (BMAG).

MiniBrum arrives at Thinktank

MiniBrum, a major new mini city space where children are in charge, will open to the public at Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum, on Saturday 25 May.

This exciting, interactive child-sized world has been created in collaboration with schools, families and community groups, and features recognisable landmarks, such as the Birmingham canals, Selfridges and the Old Joe Clock Tower at the University of Birmingham. MiniBrum may be smaller than Birmingham itself, but the permanent gallery can accommodate up to 300 people in its 900m2 space. Read More...

The Natural History Museum’s Dippy on Tour announced as Partnership of the Year at Museums and Heritage Awards 2019

The Natural History Museum’s ‘Dippy on Tour: A Natural History Adventure’ has won the Partnership of the Year award at the Museums and Heritage Awards 2019, and the team from Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery have joined in the celebrations as one of the host venues.

The awards celebrate innovative and ground-breaking initiatives from museums, galleries and heritage visitor attractions across the UK and overseas. There were 14 categories awarded on the night, of which the Natural History Museum was nominated for three. Read More...

Last chance to see Leonardo da Vinci drawings in Birmingham

Ahead of the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death on Thursday 2 May, visitors are encouraged not to miss the display of 12 drawings by the Renaissance master currently on display at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (BMAG) until Monday 6 May. 

Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing has seen over 77,000 visitors since it opened in the city in February. The exhibition is part of a nationwide event by Royal Collection Trust to mark the anniversary with 12 simultaneous exhibitions spanning the UK. Read More...

Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery celebrates boost in visitor figures

Birmingham Museums is celebrating as visitor figures released today by the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA) reveal that over 831,500 people visited Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (BMAG) last year, after a bumper year of exhibitions, events and displays. 

Last year’s figures are an increase of 38% on 2017 and showcase the popularity of hit exhibitions such as Dippy on Tour. Over a quarter of a million people flocked to Birmingham to see the Natural History Museum’s iconic exhibit, making Dippy on Tour the most popular temporary exhibition ever at BMAG.  Read More...

Birmingham Museums Trust plans for future following long-term lease agreement

Birmingham Museums Trust is planning its long-term future following agreement on a 25-year contract and leases with Birmingham City Council.

The Trust manages the city’s internationally important museum collection and nine museum venues on behalf of Birmingham City Council. The renewed agreement demonstrates the commitment to partnership between the two organisations, working together to deliver better services to citizens and visitors to the city. Thinktank announced as partners in national programme to encourage more diversity in science

Thinktank has been selected as one of the partners for a new national programme to increase diversity and inclusion in science. 

Thinktank is one of just 15 science centres and museums nationally who will be delivering initiatives as part of the UK Association for Science and Discovery Centres and the Science Museum Group's ‘Science Capital in Practice’ programme. This programme is part of the Science Museum Group Academy, which focuses on embedding good practice informed by the latest science capital research, to enable children and adults from a more diverse range of backgrounds to participate in science-related experiences. My time as a PR Assistant at Birmingham Museums Trust

Hi! I’m Kat and I’m a final year philosophy student at the University of Birmingham. I’m pretty clueless about post-graduation life but after being a PR Intern at BMT, things are becoming a little bit clearer.

Spending one day a week in our BMAG office has been ‘productive procrastination’, allowing me to occasionally run away from my degree yet still do something hugely worthwhile. Studying philosophy means often writing about abstract concepts and unlikely ethical situations. As much as I love that, it’s nice to come to BMAG and be a little more grounded in reality – even if some of the exhibitions are pretty quirky!  Read More...
