Contemporary art in heritage locations: two fascinating exhibitions at Aston Hall and Blakesley Hall

Working with the Arts Council Collection as part of their National Partners Programme, Birmingham Museums Trust is bringing contemporary art, including work by Birmingham based artists, to two heritage venues: Aston Hall and Blakesley Hall.   

Aston Hall is a magnificent 400-year-old Jacobean redbrick mansion and Blakesley Hall is a Tudor timber-framed house sited amongst avenues of modern houses that lie beyond its gates. At each site, a selection of important works from the Arts Council Collection will go on display alongside select pieces from Birmingham’s own collection. Book now to see Dippy on Tour: A Natural History Adventure for free at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery

The Natural History Museum’s famous Diplodocus skeleton cast arrives in May. Dippy is free to see between  26th May to 9th September 2018, but tickets must be booked in advance to secure the chance to see this highly anticipated exhibition. Dippy will be accompanied by an exhibition which showcases that not all dinosaurs became extinct 66 million years ago. Fun activities for all the family both at the Museum and across the Midlands will celebrate Dippy’s stay in Birmingham

Dippy the Diplodocus is an awe-inspiring 292 piece skeleton cast. He has delighted visitors since he arrived in London in 1905 and Dippy on Tour: A Natural; History Adventure, which takes in eight venues across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, is the first time he has been put on public display outside of the Natural History Museum.    Read More...

Birmingham Museums closed on March 3rd 2018 due to severe weather conditions

Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Thinktank and the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter will be closed on Saturday March 3rd 2018 due to the severe weather conditions and the advice not to travel.

We hope to re-open Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and Thinktank on Sunday March 4th. The next scheduled day for the Musuem of the Jewellery Quarter to open is Tuesday March 6th. Read More...

American tour allows hidden gems to shine at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery

Displays will be changing at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (BMAG) later this year, as Birmingham Museums Trust undertakes its largest touring exhibition to date through a partnership with the American Federation of Arts (AFA).

Victorian Radicals will see approximately 200 works from Birmingham’s world-class collection tour to at least six venues in the United States from October 2018. The exhibition will showcase Birmingham’s rich artistic heritage to a whole new audience across the Atlantic – helping to raise the profile of the the city and its collection, and raise money for the redevelopment of BMAG as part of wider fundraising plans. Iconic images by Vanley Burke on display at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery

Thirty iconic images by highly renowned Birmingham-based photographer Vanley Burke are on display at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (BMAG). 

Vanley Burke: Photographing Birmingham (1968-2011) runs until 1st July 2018 on the Bridge Gallery at BMAG and showcases images from Vanley’s celebrated ‘Rivers of Birminam’ series, which documents 40 years of African Caribbean experience in Birmingham.  Read More...

Leonardo da Vinci drawings to go on display in Birmingham in 2019

In February 2019, to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci, 12 of the Renaissance master's drawings from the Royal Collection will go on display at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, as part of 12 simultaneous exhibitions across the UK.

Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing, a nationwide event, will give the widest-ever UK audience the opportunity to see the work of this extraordinary artist, with 144 of his greatest drawings from the Royal Collection forming the 12 exhibitions. Read More...
