Join us for a fascinating panel discussion on women’s identities in Bangladesh and its diaspora from the UK to the USA and beyond.
The panel of leading female artists, activists and academics will examine feminist politics, focusing on the challenges and stereotypes they have encountered and explored. They will compare and contrast their shared identities examining common spaces and differences between their experiences and work. A starting point for discussion will be the film ‘Under Construction’ (2015) by Rubaiyat Hossain that will be available to view via YouTube during the weekend of this event.
Speakers for this event are:
- Dr Lotte Hoek, Senior Lecturer in Anthropology at University of Edinburgh. She is media anthropologist whose ethnographic research explores the social, political and technological lives of the cinema in South Asia.
- Rubaiyat Hossain is one of Bangladesh's handful of female filmmakers, and uses a feminist lens in her cinema. Her second feature film ‘Under Construction’ (2015) premiered at New Directors Showcase at Seattle International Film festival and was theatrically released and well received in Bangladesh.
- Prof Dina M. Siddqi, Associate Professor in Liberal Studies at New York University. Her research and publications cover a range of issues grounded in the study of gender and Islam in Bangladesh: transnational feminist politics, women’s work in the ready-made garment industry, the anthropology of human rights, gender justice, and non-state dispute resolution mechanisms.
- Nilupa Yasmin is an award winning Artist and Educator and visiting lecturer in Photography at Coventry University. Working primarily lens based, Yasmin takes a keen interest in the notion of culture, self-identity and anthropology. Combined with her love for handcraft and the materiality in photographic explorations, she repeatedly draws upon her own South Asian culture and heritage.
