A new display of artwork by a collective of learning disabled and autistic young artists as well as artwork created in family workshops for disabled children from the Birchfield area of the city opens in the community corner of Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery on 1 July.
The artwork by members of the collective ATHAC (Access to Heritage, Arts and Culture) Creative Artists was produced over the last few months and artwork by families during family workshops held throughout the year. Both offer the community inclusive opportunities to celebrate their creativity, individuality and lived experiences.
Working across a range of media, the artists explore themes including identity, belonging, memory, nature and everyday life through a diverse collection of artworks.
The display forms part of Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery’s community corner programme, which provides local organisations with a platform to share their stories and celebrates the people, organisations and communities that shape the city.
Andrea Bonnell, participation manager at Birmingham Museums Trust, said:
"Our community corner celebrates the incredible creativity that exists across Birmingham and gives community groups the opportunity to share their stories in one of the city's most visited cultural spaces.
“We're delighted to welcome ATHAC Creative Artists to Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery and hope visitors will enjoy discovering the artists' unique perspectives and inspiring work."
Carol Reid, director at ATHAC, said:
"ATHAC welcomes the opportunity Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery has given these artists and families to showcase their creative talents and skills."
