About Thinktank Home Education Day

Join us at Thinktank for a day designed especially for home-educating families!

For this special event day, entry to the museum is just £5 per person for home-educating children and their families. A limited number of £5 tickets are available, so we recommend booking in advance. Standard admission tickets will also be available.

In addition, we are offering a 10% discount in our shop and café as well as discounted memberships for home educators on this day. 

Throughout the day, our Learning Team will be hosting a range of free drop‑in activities, offering opportunities to explore science through play, investigation, creativity, and curiosity.

Here’s what you can look forward to:

  • Planetarium Walk‑Through
    Get a free taster of our planetarium and experience the wonder of the Northern Lights projected overhead, perfect for curious astronomers of all ages. Drop in on Level 3. There will also be a limited number of tickets available to purchase for full planetarium shows at specific times during the day. Speak to ticket desk on arrival for times and tickets.
  • Electrifying Science Live Theatre Show 
    Join us for buzzing experiments, spark-tastic science, and even a human circuit as we explore the wonders of electricity, from ancient discoveries to modern-day marvels. A show packed with live demonstrations and plenty of audience participation.
    • Shows are at 11:30am and 1pm and are included in the admission price.
    • Shows last approximately 30 minutes in the Theatre on Level 3.
    • Seats are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so we recommend arriving early.
  • Sensory Den
    A calm, immersive space for younger learners to explore light, sound, textures, and movement through gentle sensory play. Drop in at The Den in MiniBrum on Level 3.
  • Awesome Animals
    Discover more about the amazing creatures in our natural science collections through fun, interactive activities. Drop in at the Wildlife Gallery on Level 2.
  • Imagination Playground
    What will your little engineers build with our giant blue blocks? Drop in at Find Your Futures gallery on Level 2.
  • Forensic Investigation
    Collect clues, examine evidence, and put your detective skills into action as you work to solve a science‑based mystery. Drop in at the Handling Hub and Curie Classroom on Level 1.
  • Kitchen Science
    A hands-on STEM adventure where everyday kitchen ingredients lead to extraordinary discoveries! Try a new experiment you can easily recreate at home. Drop in on Level 1.
  • LEGO Building Challenge
    Take on building challenges that put creativity and problem‑solving to the test. Towers, bridges, machines—what will you create? Drop inunder the Hurricane on Level 0.

LEGO Coding & AI Workshop Trial

As part of our September Home Education Day, we will be running some limited trials of our brand new LEGO Coding and AI workshops for children and their adults. This will be an opportunity to be among the first to try out the brand new state-of-the-art Computer Science & AI kits from LEGO Education and give us feedback to help us shape and improve these workshops. 

  • This is a ticketed event. Tickets are available online as an add-on activity when you purchase your Home Education Day tickets.
  • Aimed at ages 6+
  • Workshops will be at 12pm and 1:30pm.
  • Workshops will be held in The Studio, Level 2 (through the yellow door in the picnic area).
  • Workshops last 1 hour (50 minutes of building time followed by 10 minutes for tidying up).
  • Each ticket admits one child and one accompanying adult, who will share one LEGO® Education kit.
  • One adult may supervise up to three children. Additional children will require additional child tickets.
