If you are travelling by car please be aware that Thinktank is located within Birmingham’s clean air zone.


The entrance to Thinktank is now located on the ground floor, level 0.

Opening Times

Thinktank is open  Wednesday – Sunday, 10am - 5pm.  

Last admission to the museum is 4pm.

The Science Garden is closed for essential maintenance in January.

Booking Tickets

We recommend that all visitors pre-book a timed ticket, particularly at busy times such as weekends and school holidays.

There is an Adult and Toddler (3-5 years old) ticket offer for just £15, valid from Monday to Friday during Birmingham term time only. Book your Adult and Toddler tickets.

Students get free admission every Wednesday. Free admission is via walk-up on the day and a valid student photo ID is required. See the Free Student Wednesday page for full details including T&Cs.

The Science Garden is free every day from 3pm, with varying closing times in winter due to light levels. The earliest the garden will close during the winter period is 4pm.

**Planetarium shows are £2.50 per person in addition to the Thinktank admission price. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket desk on arrival, subject to availability. At peak times (weekends and school holidays) tickets can sell out very quickly and entry to the planetarium cannot be guaranteed for every visitor.

Tickets are not refundable.

Children Visiting Us

We welcome unaccompanied children aged 12 or over. Children aged 11 or under will need to be accompanied by a parent, or a guardian aged 16 or over. Children under 16 wanting to join a Planetarium show must be accompanied by a parent, or a guardian aged 16 or over.

Children will be asked to leave if behaviour is not appropriate and affects exhibits or other visitor’s experiences.

Bag Searches

Please be advised that Birmingham Museums reserves the right to undertake searches of bags and personal property, and to refuse entry. Thank you for your cooperation.

When you visit

In order to keep our staff and visitors safe, Thinktank will be maintaining multiple safety measures until otherwise announced, in accordance with industry best practice and guidance issued by the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions.

We ask that you please:

  • Wear a face covering inside the building (unless exempt).
  • Use hand sanitiser on entering the building and regularly throughout your visit.
  • Do not pass your phone or printed tickets to our staff. You may be asked for your name and booking number.
  • Contactless card payments are preferred in order to limit personal interaction but cash will be accepted.
  • Keep a safe distance from other visitors and staff.
  • Please be aware that lockers are not available for use.

Do not visit us if you are feeling unwell, have any symptoms of Covid-19 or have been in contact with anyone that has had the virus in the last 14 days. Please contact us at to reschedule your visit.

Test and Trace

Whilst it is no longer a legal requirement, we will still be displaying NHS QR codes at the entrance to the museum in order to support the government’s Test and Trace operation. You are invited to check in on arrival, we will also continue to have a paper system available.

Safety Information

  • Thinktank has cleaners working throughout the day focusing on touch points and toilets to keep the museum safe and clean.
  • The air handling units for the museum are not recycling any air but taking it direct from outside.
  • MiniBrum is cleaned regularly throughout the day and we have multiple sets of kits to enable staff to remove used items for regular cleaning.

Signal Box Café 

To keep you and other diners safe we have the following measures in place:

  • When you arrive at the café, please take a seat – you’ll find a menu on your table. When you’re ready to order please go to the counter to make payment.
  • A takeaway service is also available. 
  • Staff will be wearing masks and you’ll also find Perspex screens in operation.
  • Contactless card payments are preferred in order to limit personal interaction but cash will be accepted.
