Accessibility
VisitBirmingham Museum and Art Gallery opened in 1885 and is now a Grade II* listed building. Accessibility is generally good but it does have some of the access issues of historic buildings.
The Gas Hall will open for the Victorian Radicals exhibition on 10th February 2023. No other part of Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is open at this time.
Please tell us if there is anything we can do to improve the accessibility of the Gas Hall, and the information that we provide.

Access Information
Getting Around the Museum
- Floors can be accessed by the lift, which can be located at the Gas Hall entrance at Edmund Street.
Parking
- There is no car park at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
- Blue Badge parking can be found on Margaret Street and Edmund Street which are in close proximity to our Edmund Street lift entrance.
- The closest car park is Town Hall Car Park which is 5 minutes walk from the museum, it is operated by Birmingham City Council. This car park also has Blue Badge Parking.
Arriving at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery
- The lift is at the Gas Hall entrance on Edmund Street. The door to this entrance is open during opening hours.
- If you approach from the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery front entrance (currently closed) on Chamberlain Square, go past the entrance with it on your right and turn right. It is a short distance to the Gas Hall entrance on the building on the left side.
Toilets
- The entrance to the toilets is at the back of the Gas Hall on the right. There is one dedicated accessible toilet.
- The door width and space leading to the accessible toilet, and the dimensions of the toilet itself, may be an issue for wheelchair users. The first entrance door is 80 cm wide and the toilet door is 91 cm wide. Before reaching the toilet door the space narrows to 83 cm in width due to the wall of nearby stairs. The toilet space is 150 cm wide and 202 cm length.
- We apologise that we cannot currently provide more accessible toilet options. This will change when Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery opens more galleries and other spaces in summer 2024.
Guide Dogs
Guide and Assistance dogs are welcome at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
