Visit Weoley Castle Ruins for a hands-on, outdoor workshop about the Norman Conquest. This session is offered as a full day trip.

Ideal for KS2 and 3 curriculum links with Edward the Confessor, the Norman Conquest and examining how the Battle of Hastings changed history.

In the morning, we will delve into the events leading up to the Battle learning about Edward the Confessor, the claimants to the throne and the people who owned and lived near Weoley Castle Ruins. Dress up as these historic figures and handle artefacts from our collection. Using the backdrop of Weoley Castle Ruins, we will then follow the tactics deployed in the real Battle and act out the Battle of Hastings.

In the afternoon, we will delve into the changes which took place after William the Conqueror took control of England. To do this, we will take an in-depth look at castle building and the importance of Motte and Bailey Castles. We will then, using engaging roleplay and acting, depict the Harrying of the North and William’s brutal measures to control the country.

Important Information

Most of this session will be delivered outdoors. In the case of extreme weather, we can move inside. We recommend suitable outdoor shoes for mud and grass, and warm clothing. The Castle is a historic site which has raised grass sections which may make it difficult for some. Please notify us if your pupils have any access requirements.

Toilets are available on site. There are no café facilities.

At Weoley Castle we can only take one class at a time on site.

School visits to Weoley Castle are available Wednesdays – Fridays.
