About Low Voltage Ecology - Live perfomance by John Biddulph

Join Dr. John Biddulph (performing as handmadesound ) for a unique listening experience where sound grows from living systems, attention slows, and hidden worlds are gently brought into focus.

Come and experience a musical world created with moss, lichen, and underground fungal networks. Using special sensors, these tiny living systems help make sound by sending gentle electrical signals that shape the music as it plays. Because the organisms are alive and always responding to their surroundings, the sounds are constantly changing,  so every visit is a little different.

Step closer and discover what it sounds like when nature joins in.

John Biddulph

Dr John Biddulph is a UK-based composer, performer, and sound artist who creates immersive music using a mix of live instruments, modular synthesis, and signals from the natural world.

His work listens closely to living systems such as moss, lichen, and mycelium (fungal networks beneath the soil). Using sensitive biofeedback technology, tiny electrical changes within these organisms are translated into sound, shaping rhythm, texture, and pitch in real time. The result is music that is never quite the same twice, where nature becomes an active collaborator rather than a backdrop.

Drawing on years of experience performing with saxophones, bass clarinet, voice, and electronic instruments, John’s performances blur the line between musician, instrument, and environment. Each piece unfolds as a shared moment of deep listening, inviting audiences to tune in to the subtle, often unheard energies of the landscape around them.

Recent projects include site-responsive performances, collaborations with artists and researchers, and large-scale works exploring memory, place, and intangible cultural heritage.
