About Saris of Strength screening and panel talk with DESIblitz
Join us for a special film screening and panel conversation marking the 50th anniversary of the start of the Grunwick dispute. This event offers an opportunity to reflect on the significance of the dispute, hear insights from invited speakers, and explore its lasting impact on workers’ rights and community solidarity.
“ Saris of Strength “ chronicles the courageous journey of predominantly South Asian women workers at the Grunwick film processing plant in Willesden, London. Led by the formidable Jayaben Desai, these women stood against oppressive working conditions, demanding dignity, fair pay, and union recognition. Their struggle highlighted the intersection of race, gender, and labour rights, and became a beacon of solidarity within the UK labour movement. People from Birmingham and the wider West Midlands played their part in this pivotal moment in British labour history.
Following the screening, a panel discussion will explore the broader implications of the Grunwick Dispute.
Anita Bhalla will host this special panel discussion exploring the legacy of the Grunwick dispute. A pioneering broadcaster and journalist, Anita moved from activism into journalism, becoming one of the first British Asian presenters on television and playing a key role in establishing the BBC Asian Network. During a distinguished career spanning more than 25 years at the BBC, she has served as a news correspondent, documentary maker, Head of Political and Community Affairs in England, UK Head and Editor of Public Space Broadcasting, and President of Circom, the association of Europe's public service broadcasters. Anita's own connection to the Grunwick dispute is deeply personal, having joined the Grunwick picket line as a young activist. Her memoir reflects on growing up as the daughter of immigrants, balancing cultures, her early working life, and the experiences that shaped her career and commitment to social justice, making her the ideal host for this important conversation.
This event is organised in partnership with DESIblitz.
