Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum, has four floors of over 200 hands-on displays and historical collections on science and technology. Including the Smethwick Engine, the oldest working steam engine in the world, MiniBrum, a new interactive gallery for under 8s, plus an outdoor Science Garden and a new 4K digital Planetarium system.
Thinktank is open 7 days per week, 10am - 5pm. Closed 24-26 December.
At Thinktank we have group packages available for adult, child and uniform groups (see further below for more details). All group bookings include:
- Access to the museum

This exciting tour package offers a fascinating insight into Birmingham’s industrial heritage. Enjoy three taster talks about some of the remarkable exhibits on display in the museum. Hear from our experts who will tell you about the Smethwick Engine. Designed in 1778 by James Watt and built by Birmingham based Manufacturers Boulton and Watt, the Railton Mobil Special, built for John Cobb’s successful land speed record attempts in 1938 and 1947 and the iconic Spitfire.
We can accommodate groups of 10 to 50 people for a great experience that will last around two and a half hours. This tour is available from Monday to Friday with a start time of either 9am or 2.30pm.
After your talks, you will have time to browse some of our other exhibits in the museum and take refreshments in the café.
The tour includes:
- Welcome talk
- Guided talks at three exhibits
- Free time to explore the museum
Price: £15 per adult.
Planetarium shows are in addition to the group price. Pre-booked automated shows cost £2.70 per person, pre-booked presenter-led shows cost £4.50 per person. To join a show on the day of the visit costs £2.50 per person but tickets are subject to availability.
Thinktank is a great day out for all types of children's groups including holiday clubs, summer schools and youth groups. The child group offer is for entry into the museum only (planetarium shows are in addition to the group price).
Prices: £4.50 per child (age 3-15 years). Under 3s are free. One adult free for every ten children, additional adults are £13.

Thinktank is a wonderful resource for Scouts, Brownies and Guides as they develop their Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths skills.

Prices: £7.50 per child and £10 per adult. One group leader goes free for every eight children.
