Thinktank redefines the concept of a science museum. Think of it more as a way to discover the world around you and the life you lead. From steam engines to intestines, this exciting museum has over 200 hands-on displays on science and technology including a digital Planetarium and outdoor Science Garden.
At Thinktank you will find four floors of hands-on exhibits and historical collections that will amaze and inspire you, showing you the science of the world all around us.
Using fulldome 360º technology the UK’s first purpose-built digital planetarium at Thinktank puts you right in the centre of the action. With a vibrant programme of shows and activities the planetarium at Thinktank will take you on an inspiring exploration of science, art, music and experimental film.
Thinktank is open 7 days per week, 10am - 5pm. Closed 24-26 December.

Planetarium shows are in addition to the group price. Pre-booked automated shows cost £2.70 per person, pre-booked presenter-led shows cost £4 per person. To join a show on the day of the visit costs £2.50 per person but tickets are subject to availability.

Special group packages
This exciting tour package offers a fascinating insight into Birmingham’s industrial heritage. Enjoy three taster talks about some of the remarkable exhibits on display in the museum. Hear from our experts who will tell you about the Smethwick Engine. Designed in 1778 by James Watt and built by Birmingham based Manufacturers Boulton and Watt, the Railton Mobil Special, built for John Cobb’s successful land speed record attempts in 1938 and 1947 and the iconic Spitfire.
We can accommodate groups of 10 to 50 people for a great experience that will last around two and a half hours.
After your talks, you will have time to browse some of our other exhibits in the Museum and take refreshments in the café.
The tour includes:
- Welcome talk
- Guided talks at three exhibits
- Free time to explore the museum
All for just £15 per person. This tour is available from Monday to Friday with a start time of either 9am or 2.30pm.
Thinktank is a wonderful resource for Scouts, Brownies and Guides as they develop their Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths skills.
This specially designed package for uniformed groups includes a show in our new 4K planetarium and a Thinktank cloth badge for every child.
Prices are £7.50 per child and £10.00 per adult. One group leader goes free for every 8 children.
