About Death, Objects & Understanding

Death, Disruption & Display

A reflective talk exploring death, disrupted histories, and what museum objects can—and can’t—tell us.

Join us at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery for a relaxed and thought-provoking tour exploring how different cultures have understood and approached death, dying, and remembrance. In recognition of Dying Matters Week, this special event invites visitors to reflect on life’s final chapter through the lens of a few powerful pieces from across the world and throughout history. As we explore these items, we’ll also consider how the ways they were collected can shape, silence, or complicate the stories they tell. What does it mean to remember, to grieve, or to honour ancestors, when the objects tied to those practices have been displaced?

Meet in the new gallery The Elephant in the Room: The roots and routes of the city’s collection.

This event is part of the Matter of Life & Death Festival hosted by Brum YODO

After the tour Brum YODO will be hosting a Death Cafe in our Tea Rooms which you can find out more about via the link below
