Since 1885, our collections have grown to over 1 million objects connected to a wide range of different peoples, locations, and time periods. With those objects comes an equally large collection of documents which can tell us things such as where the artefacts originated, what they’re made of, and how they were used. However, much of this information is stored within the original paper accession registers and is not currently accessible on our digital collections management system.

A row of books entitled City of Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery from 1906-1994.

As part of the Dynamic Collections programme, Documentation Detectives seeks to transcribe these paper registers so they can be added to our collections management database and, in future, be made publicly available on a digital platform. We would like everyone to have the opportunity to get involved, we have partnered with crowdsourcing website Zooniverse to build an online platform for transcribing these records anytime, anywhere.
