About Piece of Work - Poetry at BMAG

Poetry and spoken word arrives at the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery in the form of Piece of Work: Birmingham's premiere poetry night, featuring acclaimed, world-renowned poets, as well as an open mic at one of Birmingham’s most beautiful and unique venues: the historic Tearoom at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery.

Enjoy a pre-show museum wander through our Level 2 galleries and grab a drink before settling in to enjoy the show.

Each Piece of Work will feature two headline acts: a ‘local legend’ poet based in the Midlands, alongside an ‘honorary Brummie’ for the evening, from anywhere in the world.

Honourary Brummie -  Katie Ireland

Kate Ireland (she/her) is a writer, performer and artist from Glasgow, now based in Manchester. Kate creates work across performance, theatre, music and community settings.

Currently Kate is touring as a spoken word artist, releasing music with producers and collaborators, facilitating writing courses, hosting and organising events and gatherings and touring her one woman show, Golden Time (and other behavioural management strategies).

She will release her debut collection of poetry and short stories with Burning Eye in Spring 2026.

Local Legend - Jasmine Gardosi

Jasmine Gardosi is the former Birmingham Poet Laureate 2022-24. They are a multiple slam champion, beatboxer, and Honorary Doctor of Letters (Birmingham Newman University). They are a winner of the Out-Spoken Prize for Poetry and winner of the Saboteur Award for Best Spoken Word Performer.

Their work exploring identity, LGBTQ+ issues and mental health has appeared on Button Poetry, at the Tate Modern, Glastonbury Festival and across BBC Radio, including BBC Radio 3's The Verb, Radio 4 and BBC Asian Network. They were featured on Sky Arts' BAFTA-winning show Life & Rhymes alongside Benjamin Zephaniah, and their poem about the pandemic, filmed on a rollercoaster, was broadcast across America on PBS after going viral on Twitter.

Sign-ups for the open mic will be taken at the door, and are only valid with a ticket to the event.

Doors open at 6 pm, close at 6:45 pm, and the show starts at 7 pm.

This show is part of a brand new poetry night at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery - catch us on the last Thursday of selected months.
